AVM-WR-011Leaflet

Your dog moves. Your camera doesn't.

A robot that goes where the pet went, and the log it keeps while you are at work.

Designed in Britain, answerable in Britain.

1A day, as the robot logs it

You point a pet camera at the sofa. The dog spends the day in the kitchen. You watch an empty cushion from your desk. Avanti Home follows the animal instead of guarding a cushion, and it keeps a record of where the day went.

A specimen day log for one cat over one weekday.

FIG. 1Specimen day log, one cat, one weekday.

This is the format of the record, filled in with a specimen day, drawn to show the format. Every entry maps to something on this page: the robot finds and follows the animal, dispenses a treat on request, opens two-way audio, investigates a motion event on its own, and returns to its dock unless the dock is already taken.

A pet's day, on the planThe ground-floor plan of a British mid-terrace house with two routes laid over it. A broken line traces the cat's movement through one day: asleep in the front room, through to the back room in the morning, round the corner into the kitchen, back to the front room for the middle of the day, out into the hall when the front door goes, pacing there mid-afternoon, and finally sitting on the dock. A solid line traces the robot following the same ground, out of its dock and back to it. Eight numbered balloons mark the stops; the schedule beside the sheet lists each one against its time from the published day log: 07:02 undocked, 09:14 found cat, 09:15 lost cat, 10:05 treat dispensed, 12:20 cat asleep, 12:48 door event investigated, 15:30 cat pacing and alert sent, 18:44 docked. The plan is marked not to scale and carries no dimensions.UPFRONT ROOMBACK ROOMKITCHENHALLTHE STREETTHE YARDDOCK12345678NOT TO SCALEMID-TERRACE, GROUND FLOOR
AVM-FIG-13A pet's day, on the plan

This is the day log on this page, drawn on the house it happened in. The times and the events are the log's own; nothing has been added to them and nothing has been re-timed to make the drawing tidier.

The broken line is the cat. It is drawn in the line type a drawing office uses for the extreme positions of a moving part — an outline included for reference, which the sheet is explicitly not asserting. That is the honest line for a cat: the route is real, it is different every day, and it is not something anyone measured.

The solid line is the robot, following. It goes where the cat went, which is the whole argument: at 09:14 the cat is found in the back room, at 09:15 it is lost again, and at 10:05 it is found in the kitchen — a room no camera fixed in the back room can see into. A fixed camera would have recorded the cat leaving the frame and nothing after it.

The day ends the way the log ends. The robot finishes its patrol at 18:10, finds the dock occupied by the cat, and docks at 18:44 when the cat moves. That is on the sheet because it happened, and because it is the kind of thing a product film would edit out.

The plan is marked not to scale and carries no dimensions, no areas and no durations. It is a drawing about where, not about how far or how long.

2Is it a toy?

At £299 it is not the cheapest thing in this category, and it is not meant to be. The imports at a third of the price are cheap for reasons you find out in month four: the navigation gives up on a rug, the hinge goes, and there is nobody in this country to write to about it.

Avanti Home is designed in Britain and sold by a British company that answers to UK consumer law. The company number is in the footer of this page and it opens the Companies House record. Check us before you trust us.

3It has a camera in your house

So it has a cover you slide over the lens with a finger, and an off-switch in the app. Where the footage of your cat falling off things is processed and stored is a question with a real answer, and it is on the privacy page: UK servers, under UK law.
