Print this for the family conversation — it fits on one sheet, and every link prints its web address.
1The choice as it stands
If you have a parent living alone you know the worry: the unanswered phone, the long drive over to check. You know the options too, and what each of them costs her.
Safety and dignity are not opposites; the products just force the trade.
2What the robot does
- Fall detection
A hard fall raises a critical alert
Accelerometer analysis on the robot alerts the family in seconds. She reaches no button and wears nothing.
- Check-ins
A good morning, and a note if it goes unanswered
A gentle prompt by voice or screen. It learns the shape of her week, so a Sunday lie-in reads as a lie-in.
- Activity
The shape of an ordinary day
Movement between rooms builds a picture of an ordinary day. What reaches you is a change in it. Her every trip to the kettle is nobody’s business.
- Company
A patient voice that answers
She says good morning to it and asks it things, in a tone you set. It is configurable software and we say so plainly.
- Video
A proper conversation when you want one
Two-way audio and video through the app, so a check-in can be a face and a chat.
- Her data
Where her records live
Her check-ins and wellbeing patterns are her records before they are yours. Her records live on UK servers, under UK law — by design; the privacy page shows the working.
3What she can do without asking anyone
She closes the shutter herself. No app, and nobody’s permission, including her son’s.
4A false fall alert is not a harmless error
We will be straight about this, because it matters. A false fall alert that brings an ambulance to your mother's door is not a minor bug — it is humiliating for her and frightening for you. Many elderly-care products treat false alarms as an acceptable cost. We do not.
So the thresholds are set the unfashionable way round: they favour a false negative she confirms in a check-in over an ambulance sent to an embarrassed woman’s door. Perfection is not on offer from anyone. The cost of getting it wrong lands on her rather than on us, which is why the dial sits where it sits.
